Addressing the issue of youth gun violence in Lewiston requires a dual approach of strengthening accountability and expanding community support. This strategy involves closing juvenile code loopholes to ensure meaningful responsibility, alongside proactive measures like mandating safe vehicle firearm storage and investing in after-school programs and youth employment. By ensuring accountability structures are in place and promoting mentorship and opportunities for our youth, the state can address the root causes of violence and create a safer environment for all. I am committed to doing this work.

Since the pandemic, the cost to own a home is increasingly out of reach for too many Maine families. On top of that, rental housing is scarce and consumes too much of Mainer’s monthly budgets. To solve the crisis facing our state, the legislature must work to expedite new construction of homes and support the rehabilitation of our old housing stock to increase housing supply to ensure all Mainers have a safe and affordable home.

We know that the costs of insurance are increasing and healthcare is out of reach for too many Maine families since the federal government cuts to subsidies. We also know it’s difficult to find a behavioral health and primary care practitioners without landing on a waitlist. Healthcare, shelter, and education are pillars of stability. I will continue to advocate for bills that increase access to all three so Mainers can lead healthy, fulfilled lives.

Maine’s current tax system asks too much of those working paycheck to paycheck. Right now, Mainers earning 65,000 a year pay the same tax rate as those earning $999,999. That doesn’t make sense to me. We need reforms that address the missing middle to help fund the essential services described above.
